The servers (which I think were the owners) were very nice and knowledgeable. There was 6 of us and they were very patient as we decided and gladly let us try every kind we wanted. It would be a great place to hang out. The atmosphere was very laid back and I noticed a shelf with board games. The gelato was the best I've ever had. I usually don't like gelato, but I really liked theirs. Actually it was hard to decided what to get. I sampled 3 flavors and liked all of them.

Great gelato and great service. I recommend the mango gelato. The owner is a great resource on things to do in the area.

A great place to go after eating at one of the downtown restaurants. I like the pistachio the best. WIth few exceptions, I would rather come here for dessert than order it at the downtown restaurants (though you can get one at Shevek's across the street). And the most important thing for Silver City is they are open on Sundays!!!!

Not really sure why everyone seems to love this place so much; maybe because it's the only place in Silver City where you can get served ice cream [gelato]? In any case, it certainly doesn't live up to the hype. First off, the gelato itself is pretty questionable. I'm no ice cream expert, but you'd figure ice cream oughtta be kinda fatty; all the "premium" ice creams are filled with fat, which gives them a nice texture. This stuff melts like frozen yogurt...it just looks like water and doesn't really have that nice "feeling" of ice cream/gelato, just like some low-fat junk. Second, the customer service. The guy who owns it seems personable...but we didn't deal with him. The lady we had was rude, saying flat out "NO" (just like that, CAPS AND ALL) when my lady asked if they have shakes. Then she straight-up snatched my card when I went to pay. Seemingly minor complaints, but you could tell the lady was into being ornery. I got a coffee with milk, and my milk was served in this tiny pitcher. I thought at first it was sugar or something since the thing was so tiny, but nope. They seriously gave me like a capful of milk for my coffee. Freakin' cheapskates. They have a selection of games here to play while you eat, but they look like they're from the 80s and they have caked-on ice cream and stuff; again, a minor complaint as you don't have to play 'em, but I wouldn't have something so old and nasty up in a store I was running. Anyway, I think the accolades for this place are a bit much. At best, it's a place to get something sweet. I'd just run up to the Albertson's and get something in a pint, though, if I were you. EDIT: Check out the great repartee angry-boy owner gave at the bottom. Didn't really address how he gave me a capful of milk and he lied about the game; the Scattergories we played said "Copyright 1989." I was around then, but it sure wasn't yesterday (Longer than the supposedly impressive 11 years he's "been in this business"). I'm perplexed why he got so defensive, but clearly I was wrong about his personable nature; he's a know-it-all condescending ad hominem-using type. Get off it, dude; it isn't like all my reviews are 1-star; they're mostly in the middle. Your place just isn't very good, and trying to blame my outlook or opinion for your employee's curtness is weak. That lady was just rude, we didn't even instigate it or say anything about it. I gave you two stars, anyway. Sheesh.

Loved the mango gelato. Bonus: the owner is a great ambassador for his part of New Mexico.

We stopped by Alotta Gelato for a sweet treat after lunch. The location is fabulous on Bullard St in downtown Silver City, Nm. The street is lined with unique shops and restaurants so you can park, browse, eat and shop! Alotta Gelato has a great welcoming atmosphere and has an old timey parlor shop feel. There are several flavors to choose from including non-dairy options. We ordered the medium size cup and we were able to choose 3 flavors at no extra cost. We tried the non dairy raspberry, lemon and mango -and don't let the cup size fool you! We were served large scoops of each flavor that overflowed the cup and each was soooo delicious! A tasty gem in the heart of a cool small town.

Alotta Gelato is one of several must-do stops we have whenever we visit Silver City. We love both the friendly informal atmosphere and the top-notch gelato made with quality ingredients. They typically have about 2 dozen rotating flavors (including several sugar-free options) in addition to a few always-there standards including two of my favorites - their sweet and tart Cherries Jubilee (like a cup of cherry pie ala mode) and the 'Gila Conglomerate' (a Heath bar-based version of Rocky Road named for a local rock formation). Both of these have rich intense flavors that spread out from your tongue to your ears and tell you this is not your parent's gelato shop (assuming, of course, your parents had a gelato shop). Aside from the great (and reasonably priced) gelato, the numerous flyers and posters for local events make the shop something of a community bulletin board for what's happening and the very friendly owners are equally knowledgeable about the town and area. The shop is located in an old store front on Bullard Street in the historic downtown (near the small 'Hub' shopping area) and customers are encouraged to lounge or play board games while enjoying their treats. That they are open late on weekends is also a bonus (and makes it a great dessert spot after dinner).

The place looks a bit tacky for my taste. When I asked if there are milkshakes on the menu, the lady at the counter said "No" quite irritatedly, with long arrogant stare. No smiling. The rudest customer service I have ever experienced. I really wanted some cold dessert, so I didn't leave then. I had mint chocolate chip and coconut chocolate gelato. Flavors weren't very memorable, but there were a lot of different kinds. For the water I was pointed towards the water tank with little paper/plastic cups. The other person at the counter was nicer and was talking to other customers. It looks like it is the only gelato/ice cream place in Silver City, that is why people rate it so high. Well, I am from a bigger place where lots of other gelato spots and I am used to much better treatment.

Wonderful ! My wife and I have spent a bit of time in Sicily... And the gelati at Alotta Gelato rivals any of the gelati places that we visited in Sicily. The flavors were sharp and rich... Had a large number of varieties (including my favorite - pistachio). And the owner was friendly and helpful. After eating this gelati, it is very difficult to go back and eat plain old ice cream. Highly recommended... Especially if you have never eaten gelati before.

I wish that this establishment had a branch out in the SFO area. I stopped by after seeing some of the sights in the area and BOY-oh-BOY was I surprised. I've been to Italy three times and have eaten plenty of gelato. The pistachio gelato was VERY GOOD. As an added plus, these folks make the gelato in the facility. Silver City, I hope you realize how lucky you are.

The only reason I give this place a 4 star is because it is a bit pricey. The gelatto is great and the staff were really nice. It's a great place to go on a date. There are games that they have set out for customers to play and it is a great way to get out of the house for cheap entertainment, the games were my favorite part. I really enjoyed it there.
